Prayer Ministry: Ongoing Health Concerns
There are a number of members in our congregation with ongoing health concerns. Their names are kept on a prayer list in the church office that is circulated among the staff and intercessory prayer teams. Call the church office if you would like a copy of the prayer list so you can be in prayer for those with ongoing health concerns. If you wish to add someone to the prayer list, please contact the church office or fill out a prayer request card located in the blue registration folders in the pews. nancy@tarrytownumc.org, 472-3111

New Book by Amy Laura Hall
Several of our members have asked how they might order copies of Amy Laura Hall’s new book, Conceiving Parenthood: American Protestantism and the Spirit of Reproduction. Amy teaches theological ethics at Duke and also happens to be the daughter of Carol and Robert Hall. We will take orders for her book in the church office through MONDAY, MAY 19. The cost is $32.00 (checks made out to TUMC). We will order the books to arrive at TUMC, and Amy will come by and sign them when she is here in early June. We will call you to come pay for and pick up your book after they have been signed.
See this review from Publishers Weekly: “Hall combines perceptive reading with stirring criticism of the corporate-inspired family ideals that have come to pervade the American Christian mainstream. Focusing on the Methodist experience, Hall’s narrative potentially resonates across the theological spectrum. How did a denomination with roots in gospel activism come to be so captivated by images of material and technological progress delivered by corporate marketing? Hall mines church publications and popular media to reveal several dynamics at work. Partly because of its attempts to market itself as part of the American dream, the mid-century church became infatuated with an image of the ideal family that inevitably, if unintentionally, encouraged middle-class Protestants to insulate their families from their troubled neighbors. At the same time, corporate and scientific messages undermined the confidence of parents—and particularly mothers—in natural or traditional ways of providing for their children without commercial products and
expert advice. Aspiration and anxiety combined to create families that were more focused on themselves, less secure in their Christian identity and less engaged in mission to others. Contrasting these trends with the example of Christ and the unifying message of the sacraments, Hall invites her readers to wage a ‘resistance’ and reconsider ‘the least of these.’”
Opportunities for Children During Worship
Children Ages 3 - 5
Extended Care is offered every Sunday during the 9:30 and 11:00 worship services in room 213 for children ages 3 - 5 who attend the worship service with their parents. Room 213 is located on the first floor of the education wing at the bottom of the stairs next to the elevator. The children may leave the sanctuary following the Scripture reading to continue in worship through story and fellowship with their peers. These children return to the sanctuary to participate in Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month. All other Sundays, children are picked up in the classroom.
Children Ages Kindergarten – 5th Grade
9:30 Musikgarten and Children in Worship
Musikgarten is offered in room 413 and 414 for children in kindergarten and first grade who attend the worship service with their parents. Children in Worship is offered in room 222 for children in 2nd – 5th grades who attend the worship service with their parents.
Children’s Worship Folders
Children in our worship services are invited to pick up a children’s worship folder in the narthex. Inside, you will find puzzles, games and activities to quietly explain the parts of the service. This folder can be returned to the “return basket” in the narthex following the service.
All Children Children of any age are welcome in the sanctuary with their parent or guardian during the entire worship service. Nursery care is provided all morning for infants, toddlers and two year old children in rooms 214-216. |
